The Lectionary
Many of you may be wondering what is “the lectionary”. It is a group of specific readings
from Scripture designed to be read at worship (or in private) on specific dates.
There is both a Sunday and a Daily lectionary followed by the Roman Catholic Church and
the Episcopalian Church. The practice of associating particular texts with specific days
started in the 4th Century.
There have been several lectionaries published over the years. The United Church of Christ
uses the Revised Common Lectionary, which was published in 1992. It is divided into years A, B,
and C. Advent always begins the first season of the lectionary. Starting with the first Sunday
of Advent in 2010, we entered the “C” cycle of the lectionary. Pastor Barbara Currie usually
uses one or more of the lectionary texts on which to base her sermons.
The lectionary readings for each Sunday are found on the United Church of Christ website, www.ucc.org/worship under Worship/Samuel.
